INTENDED SEARCHES: milestone, progress milestone, retainage, progress invoice
Progress milestones and retainage are used for project-style billing.
Milestones:
Milestones split the estimate into billing stages. Each milestone usually has a name, percentage, and order.
Retainage:
Retainage is a percentage withheld from progress invoices and usually billed or collected at completion.
Steps:
1. Choose progress billing on the estimate if available.
2. Select the progress mode.
3. Enter retainage percentage if retainage applies.
4. Add milestone names and percentages if using milestone billing.
5. Confirm the milestone percentages total 100.
6. Review totals before saving.
Before saving, check:
- Progress billing is actually needed.
- Retainage percentage is correct.
- Milestone names are clear.
- Milestone percentages total 100.
- Customer understands the billing structure.
Why this matters:
Progress billing controls how project invoices are created. Wrong milestone or retainage setup can create incorrect invoices.
